At last after decades of wishing, I finally
went. Jan went along and we even meet her folks there. It was
a great Oshkosh EAA AirAdventure experience. One week of more
aircraft (homebuilt) in one place than I could ever dream about. We stayed a nice little Bed & Breakfast
about 60 miles away from Oshkosh. We parked at the airport and took
the shuttle bus over to main grounds. I was amazed to see so many
aircraft parked in the camping area... it seemed like thousands just
setting there complete with tents and camp stoves. Ok, this was
definitely a 'deer in the headlight' experience. We went to Oshkosh
because I wanted to try on aircraft. We had the plans for a Cozy MK
IV, but I had never actually sat in one. I wanted to make sure my
ever expanding girth would actually fit. We tried on every aircraft
I thought we might be interested in. We sat in an RV-9 (even though
at the time I was looking at the 7 - it's line was too long), we tried on
a Cozy (and saw a panel mod that we'd have to do if we continued in this
vein), we tried a Velocity (and felt like this was the one), we tried more
aircraft than I can remember. Jan's dad Bill tried on the RV-9, Europa, and Kitfox 6. We all went away from Oshkosh feeling like we
had found our plane. Ok, I also found my favorite dream panel in the
Blue Mountain Software EFIS. On the way back to the B&B every night we'd
stop by a nice seafood restaurant and discovered the great two for one
happy hour. I bought a back pack and everyday it was filled with
flyers, t-shirts and other odds and ends that I just couldn't pass up.
